If you start with a graphical login (i.e. run-level 5)
try editing the /etc/X11/window-managers file. This is
the file that lists the available sessions for KDM
(and maybe GDM). My BlackBox sections looks like,

EXEC=/usr/local/bin/blackbox
DESC=A Light but nice looking window manager
SCRIPT:
