-Z tells mutt to only open if there is mail waiting for you.  If there is no
mail waiting, then the command I mentioned properly pops up and instantly goes
away, but if I *do* have mail waiting, then I get that ghost window and the
crashing other bb apps.

I have been using "mutt -Z" on the command line and in other window managers
popup xterms for years.  This is not a mutt issue, neither is it my
misunderstanding of the command line argument.
