In my experience, the four fastest common window managers are (slowest
to fastest):

        IceWM
        XFCE
        WindowMaker
        Blackbox

When using a blended theme instead of a pixmap theme, WindowMaker can
still outrun and use lower resources than the first two, which are
mostly slow due to depencance on GTK+ and GLib.  IMNSHO, Blackbox is
still the easiest to configure, but the other three are at least
partially GNOME-compliant, which makes them better for certain tasks. 
It may be worth mentioning that XFCE is the /only/ window manager in the
above list that the Debian Menu system can't automatically generate menu
entries for...
