Actually, I've never even tried to use bbappconf, I just happened to recognize
what your compiler was complaining about.
No, you're not blind, I love blackbox (and associated utilities), but even
the most critical documentation is often only a brief off-topic comment in
an e-mail.
The approach I use is to follow all the links on the bb home page looking for
examples and follow all the links on those pages. I read every e-mail in the
mailing list and occasionally go back to the archives and browse the headings.
There are a couple of long threads that will help you out.
Soon, I am going to post a proposal for a comprehensive blackbox user's guide.
Blackbox deserves to be made more available to users who are not professional
software developers, without burdening those same developers with routine and
repetitious questions.
