I struggled with this same problem for a long time. Had exactly the same
problem, fonts would show in an xterm but blackbox didn't seem to want
to use them, or they were all to big. I know several people have had
this problem.

I had this problem in Redhat 6.2 and 7.0. After I installed Debian
ustable the problem went away. The only thing I can think of is that
there has to be something fishy with xfs in RedHat. From what I've heard
it can be fixed by replacing xfs with xfstt.

Don't know if you are using redhat?
