Where are you typing in this command: from a text-based console or via X11
term window?
Anyways, usually you start blackbox when X starts up, like:
$ cat ~/.xinitrc
#!/bin/sh
rxvt -fn 6x13 &
bbkeys -no -t -w &
exec blackbox
Make sure X works for you.
