The menu is stuck at its upper left corner, so when you push that corner
off the screen, and the menu size changes, the placement of the right edge
of the menu changes, not the left.  Sometimes this puts the right edge off
the screen, sometimes it does not.  A way you can avoid this behavior is
to pin your menu near the right side of the screen instead of the left.
Since the way you are using the menu really isn't a standard feature, but
a nice side effect, this isn't really a bug.  However, it might be
advisable to include a check such that at least one of the corners was on
the screen at any time.  I don't really know the right answer.  I do think
this is a clear motivator to change the behavior of a left click on the
root window to clear _all_ menus, not just top level ones.  I will look
into patches for both these changes; neither should be too hard.
