If i remember correctly when you start KDE it loads artsd. This doesn't
explain why sound would work with other WMs and not blackbox but you could
try starting artsd in blackbox and then test the sound.
Personally I've never gotten arts to play nice with my soundcard so i turn it
off completely and use OSS drivers only.
