While this is a some-what viable solution, it still downloads/receives the
large unwanted traffic. I think most everyone on this lists agrees that
these viri infected messages are unwanted list traffic. As such, they
should be filtered by the list server prior to being sent to list members.
Lets take for example one 5 Meg infected message being sent to this list.
Then, lets assume a mere 10 members on this list. We've now generated 50
Meg of traffic (not counting SMTP overhead) plus the original 5 Meg
submission (again not counting SMTP overhead), for a total of 55+ Meg of
crap. Now, with server side filtering, this can be cut down to just the
original submission (of 5 Meg in this case) and a little CPU time for
filtering. Add to this the fact that each member of the list increases the
wasted bandwidth (just by being a member) when server side filter is not
used. Now, I think you can understand why server side filter is desirable
and being requested, let alone the fact that there are people with slow
connections on the list.
