Sorry, I can't help you with your KMail problem, but a piece of general
advise:  this is not Windows.  If something is not working, you don't
have to re-install the entire OS.  If something is not working, you
(generally) don't have to reboot.  Just try to keep this in mind -- in
general, you'll learn a heck of a lot more about the way things work, if
you track down the error instead of using the ole brute-force-windows
methodology.

Sounds like KDE didn't initialize properly or something.  Not being a
KDE user, I can't tell, sorry.

How do you log in?  Through [k|x|g]dm or through console and "startx"?
Might be an error in what gets started after X comes up.
