i'd agree to that. while i'd say %99.999 of the time i'd do it at
command line, there is always that %0.001 when a fm would be convenient.
having a 'command line' interface that was mentioned as part of the fm
would probably bring that up closer to %0.010, but people vary.

i think i'd have to agree with the couple of comments that have surfaced
against the 'static file' approach. it doesnt take much to read a
directory when the fm is opened and then it could be refreshed manually
as suggested. the only real advantage that a static file would provide
is if you wanted to have it open up the entire file system tree and
expand all branches, in which case this is going to take a while if
you're reading the whole file system manually. i dont know about anyone
else, but i've never used a fm in this way so the static file approach
doesnt seem necessary to me.

you say 'some', does that mean that there others that you do like (at
least to some degree)? perhaps it'd be easier to hack one of those into
your ideal fm than to write a new one from scratch? i dont think we
really know what it is you like/dislike about the existing file
managers, which would be valuable in helping with developing one you'd
like.

i'd be interested in hearing if other folks are interested in this. i've
done some fmish work before and would be willing to take part in this if
there's interest.
