take a look at $WINDOWS-DIR\SYSTEM.INI, there is a line like
'shell=C:\windumm\explorer.exe' in '[boot]' section .. you could
maybe write some small .bat file which starts your X-server and WM
instead of explorer.exe.
didn't tried it myself yet, but i thought of this several times
already.
