gpm is not actually installed.  But thanks for the suggestion.  I just
upgraded to 2.4.9, and the problem seems much better.  The mouse has
only skipped twice in the last hour.

You might investigate uninstalling gpm. It has been known to mess 
with the mouse in X. At least make sure that the mouse line
in your XFree86Config file is pointing to /dev/gpmdata.
