With xsetroot one cannot use a background pic, right?

This seems not be an option with RH71. I downloaded from rpmfind.net
the xli-1.17.0-4mdk.i586.rpm package (xli is Mandrake's own tool?). It
requires libpng.so.3 to install. Searched rpmfind.net again to find what
provides libpng.so.3, and found out that I needed
/home/peter/incoming/libpng-1.2.0-1.i386.rpm (a RawHide package). I
fetched and tried installing:
error: failed dependencies:
libpng.so.2 is needed by ImageMagick-5.2.7-2
libpng.so.2 is needed by netpbm-progs-9.9-5
libpng.so.2 is needed by pygnome-1.0.53-7
...and so on
*sigh* Why does RH always make packages for us that are not downwards
compatible? This might be just a missing symlink issue (libpng.so.2 ->
libpng.so.3) but how can one tell?
Maybe I really should consider using the apt-get tool that works with
RPMs too!
Anyway, if someone knows a solution for xli-installation problem OR
another tool that would give me a backgrond image, I'd appreciate it. I
know that my Ximian Gnome somehow sets jpeg pics as the background, how
can I find out what app it uses for that?
Cheers,
Peter
