I'm not really sure what you are doing, but I'll re-phrase to make sure.

When you run blackbox, you have a background gradient.  Then you set the BG 
image with a command, and when you restart BB,  it doesn't maintain the 
background image you set, but has the original gradient.  right?


In your ~/.blackboxrc file look at the line:

session.styleFile :

It will point to a file somewhere.  This style has the gradient set out. And 
is loaded everytime you start BB.

Play around with some different themes to get used to how BB handles it's 
look and feel.

If you want a specific image to stay, I suggest creating your own theme.  Use 
bbconf if you like, or copy an existing one, and do it by hand.  There are 
tons of existing themes that others have done to get going with.

I'm not sure if bb.themes.org is functional again yet.  Try that.
