Actually, it's a one way compatibility. - BSD -> GPL - not GPL -> BSD BSD license allows for someone to take a BSD licensed item and use it in any way (including under a more restrictive license). It is this part of the BSD license that is not compatible with the GPL. Because of the allowances in the BSD license, something released under it can become GPL'd. However, something originally released under GPL can not become BSD licensed as the BSD license allows for something the GPL does not. Under the GPL you must return any enhancements made (other than those purely private) back to public. This the same problem with anything under the MIT license to my knowledge. Jamin W.
