Have you tried another mail client? I've put X and Blackbox under quite a load on my systems (100% CPU untilaztion with near 100% physical memory utilization along with ~50% swapfile usage) for a prolonged period of time and had no problem (other than performance hits) with Evolution or Mozilla Mail crashing either X or Blackbox.
