I sometimes have problems with my backspace key, frequently when a
program opens from another program with a term. Normally the backspace
key works fine, but when I'm trying to do a search in man, for instance,
I daren't mis-type something, because all I will see is a string of
literal '^H's when I press backspace.

xenv gives me the same output in both situations:

KeyPress event, serial 19, synthetic NO, window 0x1e00001,
    root 0x31, subw 0x0, time 2454840141, (315,55), root:(317,510),
    state 0x0, keycode 22 (keysym 0xff08, BackSpace), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 1 characters: ""

I'm using XFree86 4.1 (Debian woody). I've read the docs in
/usr/share/doc/xfree86-common/FAQ.gz, where it states that there can be
special problems with the backspace key, but I haven't found a solution
for this specific problem of the key mapping apparently being 'lost'.

Thanks for any help
Rory
