What does it mean when a window manager supports GNOME hints?

What are some examples of GNOME, KDE, and/or GNUstep hints?

I am curious, because I use a variety of gtk-based and some qt-based
apps and I am wondering if I am missing some functionality.

I remember there were some patches for KDE and GNOME support for blackbox,
but I never used them, because I wasn't sure what the benefits were.

Looking at a NetBSD package for icewm-gnome, it builds with imlib and
gnome menus support. The wmx-gnome builds with CONFIG_GNOME_COMPLIANCE and
CONFIG_GNOME_BUTTON_COMPLIANCE. I didn't look at source to see what all
that means though.
