this is completely off topic for this list, but may be tangentially on-topic for this thread. my quesiton is whether there is any facility in X for truly transparent windows that will allow them to maybe alpha blend the actual windows beneath them with the stuff they're trying to paint. like a terminal would maybe darken what was behind it and then print over top of that. i think OSX does stuff like this...
