If your distro will create an automatic menu, you're better off
incorporating it into your own custom menu, IMHO. Here's how my
~/.blackbox/menu file starts out

# blackbox menu, configured with style by bbconf

[begin] (Blackbox)
        [submenu] (debian gnu/linux) {}
                [include] (/etc/X11/blackbox/blackbox-menu) {}
        [end]
        [exec] (Mozilla) {mozilla}
        [exec] (Mutt) {bin/m}
        .
        .
        .

I have a bunch of custom entries that I hack to suite myself, but the
menu created by Debian stays up to date automagically, so I can always
find new apps there. Less fun than writing your own script, of course
:-)
