Yes, I've been told on other lists too that that is the actual
problem, and the 24bpp setting the real solution.
As already mentioned (I guess) I just needed something to tide me over
until the company helpdesk realizes what an X server is and comes to
my desk to digit the root password so I can rerun Xconfigurator
myself....
