Thanks for the help, but I did a lousy job explaining my situation,
which as far as this topic goes has already been solved.  You see, in
spite of what I said, I already have a solution to my "lock screen"
situation, I just needed to re-find it as I had my hard drive replaced
(if it interests you, my method can be found at:

What I'm really looking to do is explore the functionality of
QuickSilver.  I had another idea for what I'd like to do that's
involves the status menu, but I think I'll be best off starting a new
topic to make my intention more clear.
