I had to modify this solution to get things working for me. I did an upgrade from FF2 to FF3 and I suspect that having a mix of both FF3's new bookmark storage method (SQL lite?) and FF2's old method of bookmarks.html somehow confused things.
In addition to changing my about:config I had to take these two steps: (1) Export my FF3 bookmarks as HTML. Delete the bookmarks.html in my profile (in ~Library/Application Support/Firefox). Import the recently exported HTML bookmark file as HTML. (2) Manually add the bookmark file to my QS catalog I seem to remember reading somewhere that FF3 updates the bookmarks.html file when quitting.
