disclaimer: I'm a new PC convert to Macs and trying to get familiar
with the world. Even newer to QS.

When I invoke QS and type Mail <tab> send email compose, I always get
the mail.app application itself as an attachment to the new email.
The composition screen pops up nicely, its just been fed this ~250MB
attachment I need to delete... This is on leopard (10.5.6) and QS
beta54 (3815).

Sorry if this is a known issue, I couldn't find it.

Welcome. It sounds like you have Mail.app in the first pane and are using the Email To... action (in the 2nd pane) and then choosing an email address in the third pane.

If you just want to mail someone, bring up their address (or contact) in the first pane and use the Compose Email action in the 2nd.

If you want to send an attachment you can use the Email Item... action instead so the 3 panes would be:
<address> Email Item... <file>

Quicksilver often adapts to you. So if instead of thinking "I want to send John this file" you think "I want to send this file to John" you can also do:

<file> Email To... <address>

Note that the action is a different one, Email To.. instead of Email Item... and note the the name of the action hints at what it expects in the 3rd pane.

Note also that since QS adapts and learns what you want to do based on what you type, it means if you type something into QS you might get one result and if I type the same thing I might get a different result. A simple example is if you type J into the first pane you might see the contact John and I will see one of my contacts, say Jim. This works for actions too. So when reporting issues, it's better to say what things are in each of the panes rather than what you typed.

You will probably learn a lot about Quicksilver from looking at the manual. It's an easy to use program and very powerful, but it's not obvious.
