can't search itunes list, only browse

Hi there, QS newbie here,
  just a quick questions, when using "Browse Tracks" > to get a list
of tracks, i can't search songs by typing in their names. I can only
browse up/down with arrow keys. Same thing happens when i use browse
artists/albums/genres and get to the list of tracks. However this
problem doesn't happen if i use Music Library > Show Contents > list
of tracks. Any ideas?
  I'm using QS B54, 10.5.7, iTunes 8.2.
