I was having trouble installing plug-in modules from my work computer,
a Mac mini running OS X 10.4.9 and Firefox 3.

At first I followed the instructions when I looked up "firewall" on
the user discussion forums. I saw postings by Howard Melman,
[email protected], and others having similar problems, but their
work-arounds, involving permissions and ownership, didn't work.

Then I remembered that this institutional network is protected by a
firewall, so Firefox runs via proxy servers, but even then many file
download services (i.e., iTunes, YouTube) are blocked by the server.

Each time I attempted to download a plug-in, QuickSilver gave me an
error message Download failed, as follows:
http://qs0.blacktree.com/quicksilver/plugins/download.php?qsversion=14357&id=com.blacktree.Quicksilver.QSSafariPlugIn
can’t find host

So I tried copying the URL (the whole error message, less "can't find
host") into Firefox's browser, which quickly downloaded the file to
the desktop. At first I tried a straight copy of these files to the
Quicksilver Plugins folder (Username/Library/Application Support/
Quicksilver), but the plugins failed to install. Then I noticed that
the plugin files haid the .pkg, ending, I assumed they must be
installation files.

So I moved them back to the desktop, double-clicked the whole bunch (I
downloaded several, using the procedure above), and Quicksilver
proceeded to carry out the installation itself, asking if I wanted to
copy the plugins to the proper folder.

It all worked fine, some modules required a restart to work (iTunes),
now all the plug-ins are where they are supposed to be and working
fine.

I hope this manual installation helps other people out!
