Simon, one thing you could try that would possibly let you know whether the problem is QS or some external conflict:
1. Log out of your user. 2. Create a new user using whatever name you choose. (Give it admin ability) 3. Log in to the new user and start QS. This will tell you if QS is crashing due a conflict in another "start at login" program you have running. Sorry if you knew this already. If this does the trick at least you'll know where to start the process of elimination.
