This would probably be a pretty cool feature to add. I think implemented as a plugin would provide the easiest and cleanest route for implementation. Adding this feature to the core code could be problematic because its so finicky and sensitive to changes (everything being dependent on everything else). Otherwise very cool feature indeed.
