I removed the external drive from the drives catalog (by unchecking -
hope that's what you meant).
Find All Applications is (and was!) unchecked.

I have about 20.000 items in my custom catalogs - could they slow
things down so much?

As I already wrote in my answer to Rob:
Firstly, I'll have to be able to reproduce this problem reliably.
Then, I can test several "configurations" (e. g. reduce the custom
catalogs).

It seems to be only the first time when I chose this action that it
takes so long.
If some time later I do the same, the actions pane and the 3rd one
open instantly.
