It already does by design. That is to say, it just asks the OS to open an address like ssh://hostname, so you need to configure the OS to use iTerm for such addresses. (I think there’s a preference in iTerm to set that up, but there are also numerous third party tools to set what opens what protocols.) I used iTerm for a couple of weeks and had it working.
