Since ' is another way to enter text mode, perhaps using . could become an 
option. I know you have to choose some easy to type character for text-mode but 
. is in virtually every file name and it would be kinda useful to be able to 
identify extensions when searching. I suppose the indexing mechanism might have 
to be adjusted to include . too.
