Hi Jason -

A .dmg file stands for 'Disk Image' so it's kinda like inserting a CD. You
double-click on a .dmg file to 'mount it' on your desktop. You'll see a new
icon - could be a folder - and when you double-click on that you'll see the
contents of what's contained in the .dmg file. (By the way, to 'eject' the
mounted .dmg file, you either 'control+click' or 'right-click' or drag the icon
on the desktop to the trash icon on your dock (which will change to a trash
can.)

Anyway... you never run an application from the mounted .dmg's folder. rather,
you drag it to your 'Applications' folder and run it from there. Sometimes,
whoever created the .dmg file conveniently provides a shortcut to the
'Applications' folder (denoted by a small black arrow) so you can drag the
application to that and drop it. If not, open a new Finder window, navigate
your way to your 'Applications' folder and then, making sure you can see both
the mounted .dmg's Finder window and the 'Applications' folder window, you can
drag and drop between the two folders.

Once you've got the app - in this case, 'Quicksilver' - into your applications
folder, eject the mounted .dmg and then delete the actual .dmg file you
downloaded - you don't need that anymore. Find Quicksilver in your
applications folder, double-click on it and off you go. Same goes for many
other applications too. Sometimes, you get a '.pkg' file to install an
application. In those cases - just double-click on the file and follow the
on-screen instructions to install the app.

Enjoy your Mac.

Tim.

PS: I was typing this when Patrick sent his reply. This is the long version
;-)
