If you want to open Gmail.com type the full URL The URL you are opening is a web search URL. If you want to add the actual URL to your catalog (so you don't always have to type the whole thing, try adding it as a favourite in your browser (e.g. Safari), then installing the corresponding plugin in Quicksilver (e.g. Safari plugin)
Aside: It seems like perhaps the "search for…" action is lower than the "Open URL" action. Search for the two of them in the actions preferences and make sure the "search for…" action appears above the "Open URL" action in the list.
