I don't argue the splash screen being superfluous, but it's QS's cue when no icons indicate it's started, a one time per launch event compared to the other effects — and it's cool. With a separate setting (hidden or not), I'd even suggest enabling it by default when no icons in the dock or the menubar are showing.
