If the identifier it refers to doesn’t exist in the catalog, it won’t do anything. For example, I just enabled iCloud for Contacts (since that appears to be the only way to sync them to a phone under 10.9) and the identifier for all my contacts changed, so I’m having to retrain it on those mnemonics.

For the ones that aren’t working, are you sure there’s currently something in the catalog with that identifier?

And when I remove some from the plist with plist editor (v3.2 - too old?) they still come up in the QS search.

What comes up, exactly? No mnemonic will appear unless you type it, in which case, I would *expect* it to be visible. If you mean you still get the same results when typing a particular mnemonic, maybe that’s just the best match for what you’re typing. Did you remove references to the identifier under `implied` as well? That will greatly influence the rank, and rank is how things are sorted once you start searching.
