That works in general, except that I switch contexts often enough and
forget to mute my volume every time I do that so that the default
isn't always right.

I'd like to be able to default to muted whenever the headphones are
unplugged, and only turn it up when I want to.

Maybe another solution would be to simply mute the volume whenever the
machine wakes from sleep.
