Hmmm. The rotating cube effect was crashing the Setup Assistant, too.
The solution there was to stop using it, but doing that to the Cube
interface would sort of rob it of its heart and soul.
I thought it was a 10.9 change, but it does kinda work with older
versions of Quicksilver, so apparently not.
