It seems to get bogged down on some systems when you configure Contacts to sync with external services other than iCloud. We haven’t been able to reproduce it reliably enough to figure out what’s wrong.
Which external sources do you have configured in Contacts? (Feel free to e-mail me directly if you don’t want to share with the world.)
