One of my favourite options for me was the ability to search for an itunes
playlist and automatically play it

Since few months ago this stopped working for me, and I am baffled

When I type the itunes playlist search term it just doesn't find any
playlists at all!

Check Preferences → Catalog → Plugins and make sure the iTunes and iTunes Playlist presets are enabled.

Make sure the plug-in itself isn’t disabled (in Preferences → Plugins).

Something else to check that I didn’t even know about until yesterday: There’s a new option in the Advanced section of iTunes’ preferences. Make sure “Share iTunes Library XML with other applications” is enabled. This is how Quicksilver reads your library.

My itunes playlist is on an external drive, so this might be the problem. But it's been working with no problems for years.

Quicksilver’s pretty good at finding your library. As you say, it’s always worked and that code hasn’t changed. You could check that the XML file exists there, I suppose.
