ah ha! turned on Safari bookmarks in Catalog/Plug-ins and that brought everything back to normal (so far). Since I also have Catalog/Plug-ins/Firefox/bookmarks checked, I guess that would point to the Firefox (v1.0.1 - 2014) plug-in not being compatible with Firefox Quantum, as the Safari bookmarks were imported into Firefox Quantum on install.
