It's been a while, but could you create a trigger for:

Safari Current Web Page, Open URL With..., Firefox

This way, for any page that safari doesn't render, you could hit the key to 
have that url open in Firefox.  It wouldn't be automatic for NYT urls, but it's 
only one hotkey and it would work for any such problematic page.
