Sorry for jumping in this late, and I'm not sure if it applies to the BLFS book, but with the LFS book the rendering is greatly sped up if you use the --nonet option or remove the external DTD URLs, ie:
<!DOCTYPE book PUBLIC "-//OASIS//DTD DocBook XML V4.4//EN" "http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook/xml/4.4/docbookx.dtd";
Or... I suppose you could set up those DTD files locally and have your machine route www.oasis-open.org to the local machine. Anyway, the DTD URLs really slow down the rendering.
