Andy,
  See http://wiki.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/ticket/1834 for rationale.
We don't want to install bitmap fonts in the fontconfig hierarchy.

Then wouldn't it make more sense to put the bitmap fonts somewhere else? We need to install some fonts where fontconfig can find them or we're going to be back where we were with a constant stream of people posting errors because they need to configure their fonts.

So why not implement just that? Make DejaVu fonts a required package, install them in /usr/share/fonts, and fix https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3322

Or configure Fontconfig to look into /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/{TTF,OTF} (a patch to fonts.conf is acceptable, because all distros are doing this sort of things) with a note that non-Latin1 users have to download more fonts and put them into /usr/share/fonts.

Surely it makes more sense to have a basic configuration that works and then if some people want to tweak their setup to optimise the antialiasing or whatever, that info should be in another page or the wiki.

Surely it doesn't make sense to put instructions in the book if they have to be undone later. Suboptimal configurations are acceptable only if they don't include steps that have to be undone.
