Comment:
Archaic gave me access to in IMAP server, so I was able to test out the
sasl functionality. Worked without issues as far as I could tell. I
straced mutt, and it showed the different sasl plugins loading as it
stepped down from most secure available one to the one eventually used for
authentication.
Closing this as fixed with mutt-1.5.11 in the book now.
