I'm gonna close it. There's still some information that would be useful,
like using Fontconfig's font matching system the right way instead of
hacking away on fonts.conf. But I think the font discussion is about as
good as it's going to be. We can always add more on a per need basis, but
it's pretty solid.
For reference, the bulk of the changes went in in r5764, r5765 and r5766.
