Also, because of the build defaults - the GTK client is automatically built if GTK is found, but the text client isn't never built unless you specifically say to (probably because the text client just plain sucks...irssi is much better...but no need to mention *that* in the book :p) - GTK can probably be changed to a "Recommended" dependency (certainly seems to be recommended by the developer...in fact the XChat documentation lists GTK as "required", thought this isn't technically true...seem to be going out of their way to keep anyone from knowing about the text front end).
