In LPRng-3.8.28, it needs another sed to works fine with Make 3.81:

sed '[EMAIL PROTECTED]@SHELL=/bin/sh@' Makefile.in
}}}
It's a problem of syntax, and the sed in the book doesn't solve it
entirely.
