When distros are able to patch the current release to solve a problem, and
the next release isn't available, I usually prefer to apply patches. In
this case, a quick google suggests there are patches out there (e.g. lunar
linux, fedora).
For fedora, it looks as if a very simple patch fixes it

lunar has a *much* longer patch cdrdao-1.2.2-gcc-4.4.x.patch.bz2 found at
http://de.lunar-linux.org/lunar/patches/
I'm still on gcc-4.3 so I have no opinion on how well these patches fix
the problem(s).
