I think you have failed to follow the dependencies in the book: The first
is 'X Window System' which points to 'X Window System Environment' where
we list the components of Xorg.
The tenth item there is Xorg Libraries, On that page, as the 19th item, is
libXft-2.3.1.tar.bz2.
You need to build the whole of Xorg, of which libXft is just one part,
Pedantically, there are alternatives to twm and xterm, but for a first-
time-build you should follow the book, and test startx before going any
further.
